Baracking the Line

Thursday, November 6th, 2008

When I was in Cleveland for the last get-out-the-vote push for the Obama campaign, one of the things I helped out on was coordinating local musicians to play music for folks who may be in long voting lines (”Barack the Line”). The idea was that during 2004, Kerry lost a lot of votes in Ohio because in the mostly working class and black areas, voting lines were so long that people were abandoning in droves.

This year, four years later, the giant promotion and success of early voting actually prevented such long lines. While this was great news and as we all now know, Ohio turned blue, it meant for virtually no crowds for these musicians to play to. We felt pretty bad having planned this all out, and then have such a low turn out. The following is a conversation with the angelic RnB singer DL of the Young Millionairz expressing his disappointment at the lack of crowds:

DL: I thought it was gonna be all crazy with people yellin’ and shoutin’ and then I’d start singing and — people would stop, ‘what’s that sound?’ and I’d SOOTH the crowd. HA HA!

Me: And just when you hit the high note, it starts snowing…

DL: HAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHHA

It was a good moment.
