Give me a DJ with balls!
When I was a youth in college, I got into DJing as a way to express myself and my taste in excellent music. Sure the music was “dance music,” but like anything I’m really into, it was challenging — only the bravest souls would dance to my sets.
However, talking with the great majority of DJs, it seems I had it all wrong. They tend to gage the crowd and provide them what they wanted. What they wanted, of course, was shitty, repetitive, boring and popular dance music. These DJs would actually go out of their way to keep some Justin Timberlake on hand just in case the crowd needed to be lulled into a false sense of the great white hope.
Due to this opinion, I’m always weary when one of my favorite dance music producers is coming to town to do a DJ set. You’d think that given their producer status, they’d be down to play some of their own tunes and similar tunes by others. But time and time again, they’ll conform to the crowd or the “scene” and just play some shitty house music. The one time a DJ/Producer didn’t do that and instead played their varied and eclectic music, a drunk club girl comes up to the DJ booth and gives him the doube thumbs down! This was Domu from the UK, and this chick is dissing him? Long story short, I almost got my ass kicked by her muscle bound boyfriend for asking her to leave.
But that is this shit I’m talking about. Where are the DJs with balls? If someone is informed enough to know who you are or what kind of music YOU are into when you spin, they should know what to expect. And folks who don’t, should learn something new. And if they want to hear JT, then the should get the fuck out.
That being said, I recently discovered a great site with a bunch of rare grooves and great mixes. Lovefingers.org is the place with the goods but even with these kids, I’m weary that’d I’d go to a club and see on of these DJs play a set like

Is it too “chill” to dance to? Does it change too much for you? Are you craving some vocoder singing? Somehow, somewhere, people would dance to this; I’m convinced of it. And I want those days back.
